A Bed for Lauren

Image
This is an older project from 2010, but it's one I did all on my own, except for a little gluing done by Ty.   Lauren LOVES her dolls.   Specifically the ones that look like her.  I wanted to do something special for her Christmas gift that year.  I searched for several months for the right size and style bed.  I found one at a yard sale. It was yellowed, smoky, and slightly broken.  I loved it.  It was rough in places so I took to it with a sander and smoothed the rough spots.   Ty helped me glue up the broken spot and it was ready for paint.  You can see here some of the cracked parts that needed to be fixed The first thing I did to this was paint it white, a fresh bright color allowing for all the chips, nicks and dings to be from years of love from Lauren playing with her dolls.  After I painted it I found some fabric that matched Lauren's bedding and I made a cushion and pillow to fit the bed.  What's a bed with out a stuffed bun

Victrola into Media Cabinet

When Ty and I bought our house we never intended to have a TV in our living room.  We wanted it to be a sitting area where we could visit with friends and family.  Now, 3 kids later, we want to watch movies in our living room while the kids play video games in the family room in the basement.  So we have a fun set up in our living room, but I'll post more about that later.  Right now lets talk about our media storage solution.  We have quite a few antiques in our living room and there is a music theme that quietly runs through the space.  While we were at Sparks, KS flea market we came across an old victrola and I offered the seller $20 for it and it was ours.  This old weathered tired, broken victrola is all ours.  The before pictures don't show quite how weathered it was. The next step after getting this gem home was to CLEAN it.  It had a musty odor and well, we'll just say it had that 'lived in' look going.  So we cleaned it and  Ty took the

A Gift for Bethany

Ty's sister requested a bat for her Christmas gift.  Like something in acrylic, like a paperweight.  Well, that's too easy!! So,  Ty got to thinking and ordering.  Then we went shopping at antique malls for the perfect materials to make her a one of a kind gift. The first step was to order bats.  Ty purchased one bat that had it's wings wrapped around his body and the other bat with his wings spread out. Next was the fun part, shopping for something to display them in.  For the one with the spread wings we went to our favorite Antique Mall and looked for a small shadow box or something to make into a shadow box.  Ty came upon an old red suitcase that a little girl would use to carry her doll & accessories.  The vision was to make a window on one side and put in some glass and mount the bat inside, leaving it accessible by simply unlatching the case.  Easy enough.  Here's each step of the process.
