DIY Lace Painted & Stained Stairs

Have you ever wanted to rip all the carpet off your stairs and just do something with whatever you find underneath?  That's exactly what Ty and I did. After I talked about doing ANYTHING to the stairs as long as it wasn't more carpet. We knew we were going to be putting in new flooring in the next month. So no time like that weekend to undertake this project. We start most projects on a Friday night and try to have them done by Saturday night if they are small.  This project took a little longer because of temps and dry time and we were working with ebony stain and that just seems to take FOREVER anyway.  We finished this project that Sunday night and have loved each step of this projects.
While Ty was at work I ripped all the carpet off the stairs. So nice of me right? He came home to this and his reply was "so are we doing this THIS weekend?"

This is the only stair tread we had to replace. We just bought a new one from Lowe's and went on.

I HATED the carpet.

Titus loves demo

We decided to remove the railing. It's in the attic space if anyone is looking for it. We numbered the balusters and everything.

We interrupt this project to paint the walls and front door

Ok, so it took longer than 1 weekend to do this project, but the actual stair portion...it was only a weekend. We did decide to go ahead and repaint every wall on our main floor before doing flooring. So we did a color called "Almost Black" on the stairs and as an accent in the living room/dining and a few shades lighter, I can't for the life of me remember it's name, but it's a grey color, for the rest of the walls. It's lovely.

Titus is back at it again, this time sanding

Advice of the day:

On a test pice of wood, try out your 'genius' idea to make sure it will work In Real Life.

Sample, it looks A-mazing!

Step 1. Sand each stair tread
Step 2. Clean area WELL
Step 3. Spray Paint
Step 4. Stain
Step 5. Wait
Step 6. Ta-DA!

It's important to take turns.
Ty is allergic to stain so he did the spray over our stencil
and I did the staining.

This is sorta like painting yourself into a corner

Work in manageable sections and don't paint all the stairs at once, or you can't get up and down. This is one of the last steps before we were done for the night.

 Time for the TA-DA!!!!

The walls were STILL dusty despite our efforts, but LOOK at those stairs!

Open our front door and walk straight into the stairs. The lace is subtle.

This project was done by us, the DIYers and home owners.

We are not professionals and as such

we do our own thing, and love it.
